2010 Smithton Hole Demolition Derby Rules
Demolition Derbies Begin at 3:00 P.M or as soon as inspection can be
completed (Inspection will not be rushed due to late arriving cars).
COMPETITION CARS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED ON GROUNDS
AFTER 2:00 P.M. The intention is to have a consistent start time that
fans can rely on. Also, ending the event at a reasonable hour allows
for more family participation.
80's & Newer Class
Only hardtop automobiles will be allowed to compete in the main
event. (No Jeeps, Trucks, Taxis, Limo's, Hearses or Ambulances). No
smash-top wagons, smash-back sedans/wedged trunks, no folding of
quarter panels over trunk lids.
Car Inspection
Inspections should close at 2:45 followed by a DRIVERS MEETING.
The officials reserve the right to re-inspect cars at any time during the
event. Winning cars may be further investigated. i.e. body mounts
pulled to check washering, body cut to better inspect frame rails. If
you do not want the body mount bolts cut, bring appropriate tools to
remove. Refusal of re-inspection will result in a disqualification.
Official’s decision is final. Cars will only be re-inspected one time.
General Preparation
The following MUST be removed: All glass except windshield
(optional), original gas tanks, all seats (except driver's seat), all
chrome, wipers, antenna, door handles, mirrors and sun visors, rear
compartments of station wagons, and all other loose items. Cars
must be swept clean of debris prior to arriving at the track. All
participants must have a working fire extinguisher !!
Safety During The Event
Stay in the car and do not loosen safety belt until event is stopped or
over. After second fire in same auto, in same event, the car will be
disqualified. No deliberate hitting of drivers' door. Do not use driver’s
door as a shield.
No teamwork (double-teaming). Event will be stopped and the drivers
will be warned. Second stoppage is cause for disqualification of one
or more drivers. Official’s decision is final.
Frame
NO WELDING ON THE FRAME ANYWHERE UNLESS WHERE
ADDRESSED IN THESE RULES!!!
Welding bumper attachments to the frame as discussed in the
bumper section below is permitted.
Welding of cross-member to the frame, IF replacing or moving the
factory cross-member as discussed in the cross-member section
below, is permitted.
No tilting of the front frame section on any make of car.
No painting of the frames. It is the driver’s responsibility to ensure
that there is no “overspray” on, OR IN, the frame if the car is re-
painted.
Trailer hitches and all corresponding bracing must be removed.
Fresh Cars: No factory seams may be re-welded ANYWHERE on the
car. If the factory missed it, too bad. NO plating of the frame
ANYWHERE. If weld is present anywhere other than bumper mounts
or the cross-member mount areas, the car will not be allowed to
compete AND THE DRIVER IS DISQUALIFIED FOR THE YEAR. DO
NOT BRING SEAMED/LOADED CARS to Smithton Hole Raceway.
Official’s decision is final.
Reruns: Rerun fixes must be stitch welded only - Allowed at the
discretion of the officials. BENDS DO NOT REQUIRE FIXING. The rip
in the frame must be visible. Patch metal no thicker than 1/8” may be
used. Patch may only extend 1 inch beyond the ripped area in any
direction. OR…rips may be welded one-inch-on, one-inch-off for
repair but the evidence of the rip must remain.
Body
No reinforcing of body anywhere.
Roof signs are allowed but mounting bracket is limited to 1/8’’ thick 2’’
by 2’’ by 36’’length.
Body Mounts
Body mounts may not be moved or added. (Exception: speaker deck
mount may be bolted.) No metal may be added to the original body
mount holes in the frame or body. Body mounts 1/2" bolt maximum
with one 3"x1/4" plate top and one 3"x1/4" plate bottom. Stock
rubbers can be removed . Body bolts are not to pass thru bottom of
frame. Plate or washers may NOT be welded to frame or body. DO
NOT WELD BODY TO FRAME.
Bumpers
Fresh Cars: Bumpers may be cut to length. No extra reinforcements
(bolts, washers, etc) chain around bumpers may be welded or bolted
to bumper shock to keep bumper from falling off. Chains may not be
heavier than 3/8" (No welding of links together) Relocating of bumper
shocks is not permitted. Max bumper height 24’’, minimum 15’’ to
bottom of bumper, checked in three places. Maximum of 6’’x6’’x1/4"
thick plating may be welded onto the bumper shock plate if a different
make bumper is being used on car. Bumper ends if cut can be stitch
welded, but inner to outer bumper can not be welded.
Rerun Cars: No protruding frame rails or bumper shocks will be
permitted. Official’s decision is final.
Doors
Cars may be welded using 3" welds every 3" or 6" welds every 6"
(max) on passenger doors, trunks and station wagon tailgates (in lieu
of outside welds, station wagon tailgates may have a 3"x3"x1/4"
angle 3" long welded on inside every 3"on the bottom only ) but not
both. You MAY NOT weld both inside and outside. Or cars may be
wired, banded, bolted and chained in the same way. Drivers door may
be welded solid if desired. Banding/wiring/chaining every 6" on
passenger doors and trunks. Bands no larger than 1-1/4" wide.
Chains must be at least 1/4". No welding or bolting the body to frame
and bumpers. No body seams may be welded! No wires from body to
roof includes windows(Except from rad support to bumper ) .
Wires/Banding can not go around the frame.
Patches: Rusted cars may be patched. Patches must be automotive
body tin only, strictly enforced. Stitch weld patches 1" on 1" off. Patch
one side only (you must prove your rust). Officials reserve the right to
drill all patches with an 1/8” drill.
Driver’s Compartment
One steel bar or pipe (minimum 2" dia., maximum 4” dia.) may be
(recommended) mounted securely behind the driver’s seat, from door
post to door post (not to floor). Plate or angle, no thicker than ¼” may
be used to mount the pipe behind the door posts but must be
touching the seat.
One steel bar or pipe (minimum 2" dia., maximum 4” dia.) may be
(recommended) mounted across the dash. Mounting plate is to be no
larger than 6" x 6" x 1/4" flat plate.
Post-less cars may have one (1) 3/8 x 3" plate from sheet metal to
sheet metal in place of post on the driver’s side.
One connection is required in the middle of the windshield area
between the firewall and the roof of the car. Support can be chain
(chain must be at least 1/4”) or plate/bar no larger than 3/8” x 3".
Plate/bar is to be securely bolted or welded.
OPTIONAL: A Halo Roll Cage may be put on pipe behind the driver's
seat. It can be welded to pipe behind seat. Halo may touch door or
door post on driver's side, but cannot be welded or attached in any
way at that point. Halo can have (5) 1 inch welds on the roof on each
side. Halo may not travel more than half way across inside of car from
driver’s side. (minimum 2" dia., maximum 4” dia.)
NO FRESH PAINTING OF INSIDE OF CARS!!!
Fender Wells
Five (5) bolts no larger than 3/8” with 3/8” washers may be added to
each fender well to bolt the inner and outer. Fenders can be rolled
under and bolted to rad support, and or wrapped in front of rad
support and bolted using (2) 3/8’’bolts with (2) 3/8 washers or (4) 1’’
welds. If hood is folded over, bolts may not pass thru fold of hood ,
nor can body mount pass thru bottom of wrapped fender.
Trunk
Must cut 1 (one) hole, 12" minimum diameter in trunk lid for
inspection. Maximum of six 3/8" bolts and washers allowed around
holes AND must cut 1 (one) hole, 12" minimum diameter in trunk floor
for inspection.
Tucked trunks: May be welded to floor and quarters 3’’on 3’’off ,or 6’’
on 6’’ off max. Body mount is not to pass thru tucked trunk lid.
Trunk may be dipped. Must have 12’’of space between trunk floor and
trunk lid. Trunk floor is rear body mount location, not bottom of spare
tire pan. Quarters may not be rolled over .
Hood
Vehicles must have hood in place. If stock hinges are removed, two
(2) of the allowable bolts must be placed in the hinge area. Six (6) 1/2"
bolts or 4 (four 3/4 bolts max with no larger than a 3"x1/4" washer to
hold hood down. Min. 8"hole (with excess sheet metal removed from
hole) MUST be cut in hood to enable firemen to put out fires without
lifting hood. Make sure cooling fans are covered.
Exhaust coming out of hoods must be pointed straight up. If exhaust
is considered to be pointed in a direction of danger to the fans, other
drivers or the driver, the car will be disqualified. Official’s decision is
final.
Radiator
Radiators can not be relocated. May be factory mounted, banded or all-
threaded (two places maximum) to core support vertically or
horizontally. OVERFLOW must be pointed toward ground and
attached to car so it will not spray forward. No expandable foam in
the core support area.
WATER ONLY. No antifreeze (crowd safety)
A screen (1/8” maximum wire size) or condenser may be added to
protect the radiator from debris. Screen/condenser may only be bolted
at 4 points. Tabs may be welded to allow for the bolts. Welding of the
tabs will be at the Official’s discretion. Official’s decision is final.
9 wire: Four(4) wraps of 9 wire are allowed at two(2) locations from
the rad support to front bumper.
Gas Tank
Relocated gas container must be secured firmly behind drivers seat in
metal approved cans only (boat cans will be accepted (6 gallon
maximum). No extra gas line coils under the seat. Cover tank to
prevent possible splashing. Compact Class only, may relocate tank
inside car but must have a kill switch on the fuel pump. NO PLASTIC
CANS
Gas tank protectors are allowed:18’’W x 24’’L max, mounted to seat
bar. Two(2) bars may be connected from protector to rollover bar but
not connected to body at any point.
Battery
Battery mounted to passenger floor (not in seat). Battery must be
covered. Only 1 battery is permitted.
FIRE EXTINGUISHER
Mandatory.
Front Suspension
Front suspension may be welded to attain maximum front bumper
height of 24”. Can either weld top or bottom control arm but not both.
Bottom arm can be secured with one brace only. Shocks must be
stock, working shocks. No modified or homemade shocks. Or, shock
can be removed. Welding of tie rod is permitted, but no adding metal.
Rear Suspension
Shocks must be stock, working shocks. No modified or homemade
shocks. Official’s decision is final.
Coil springs may be welded, wired, banded, bolted or chained top or
bottom, NOT BOTH. If attached on top, spring cannot be connected
to body. NO spacers allowed unless welded in. Coils can be
lengthened or welded-end to-end to obtain maximum rear bumper
height of 24”. Do not weld top of coil to body.
Trailing arms may be lengthened or shortened and can be boxed. No
homemade trailing arms.
Leaf springs: All cars with leaf may have 9 springs on each side
including the main springs and may be 5/16" thick , factory style leafs.
(if 5/16 wrench WILL NOT fit over spring YOU WILL NOT RUN) . Must
have min. of 1" stair step starting from the eyebolt. All springs must
be mounted under the main axel tube. All leafs must be under the
main. Springs may be clamped with factory tin clamps , 2 behind axle
and one in front per side. (no duct tape ) Home made spring clamps
are permitted, 1/4” thick, 2”wide by 4” long max. 1/2” bolt max.
Cross-member
Factory cross-members may be moved or removed to allow for drive-
line installation. Cross-members must either be original to the car, or
no heavier than 1/4 “ angle iron or c -channel in place of original cross-
member. Cross-member can be bolted to frame with 2 bolts at each
end or welded, not both.
Axles
Maximum 5 Bolt rear-ends may be used.
Driveline
Any engine, transmission, drive axle combination may be used. Air
cleaners will be mandatory. Skid plates may be welded on oil pan and
transmission pan (separately), no more than 1" wider than the part.
Brakes
Must have working brakes. No deliberate hitting of arena tires for
braking purposes. If it is obvious that brakes are not working during
the event, the vehicle will be disqualified.
Tires and Wheels
Only stock wheels can be used. Valve stem protectors will be
allowed. All wheel weights must be removed. Studs must be removed
from drive axle tires. Any ply tire 15" maximum tire may be used. Tire
in a tire is legal. Directional tires are legal. DOT not required. NO
LIQUID MATERIALS IN TIRES, water, foam, cement etc is not
permitted. Air only!!!
Qualifying for feature (providing a 10 car minimum is met)
Top 4 cars of each heat, will qualify for that nights feature. Top 3 in
heat and feature qualify for championship, 4th place car in heat must
finish top 3 in feature to qualify for championship.
Top 3 cars from consolation heat will qualify for that nights feature,
not championship. Consolation winners must finish top 3 in feature to
qualify for championship.
Season will be split into 2 halfs. May 1st - June 19th spring
championship. July 17th- Oct 2nd fall championship. Winner of spring
championship automatically qualifies you for fall championship.
Winner of fall championship automatically qualifies you for next years
spring championship. To be the man, you got to beat the man.
Trucks
Top 3 in Truck heat qualify you for that class championship at the end
of the year.( Trucks and compacts will have one(1) championship at
the end of the season.
Trucks in addition to general building rules: bumper height ( 12’ min.
and 28’ max.), no smash top suburban. Must have front or rear
driveshaft removed. One ton trucks Max., no utility trucks. Trucks
must have min. two(2) bars from bed floor to cab roof to protect gas
tank, but not extending past wheel humps. Bedsides may be folded
over to bed floor from wheel hump back, but cannot be attached to
bed floor in any way. Frame restub must be same as original .
COMPACT CARS will consist of rear wheel drive cars (106’
wheelbase or smaller) Front wheeled drive cars of any wheelbase
(EXCEPT FOR 1985 and OLDER ELDORDO, TORONADO, AND
RIVIERA)
Top 3 compacts in heat qualify you for compact championship at the
end of the season. General building rules for 80s class apply.
Old school Heat
Will be Pre-register. If 10 car minimum not met, class will be cancelled.
No Chrysler Imperials of any year for old school heat! Rules are the
same as 2009 and are located on the main page with the exception of
no Chrysler Imperials.
Payouts for 2010
Trucks and compact (guaranteed)
1st $300 + trophy + qualifies for that class championship
2nd 200 + trophy + qualifies for that class championship
3rd 100 + trophy + qualifies for that class championship
Old School Heat
Entry fee: $75

80’s heat
3 co-winners $100 + trophy+qualifies for 80s championship
4th lucky dog and spot in feature
80’s Feature
1st $800 +trophy+qualifies for 80s championship
2nd $400+trophy+qualifies for 80s championship
3rd $200+trophy+qualifies for 80s championship
a consi will be run taking the top 3 cars to the feature but the consi
DOES NOT QUALIFY you for championship. If 3 or less cars are in
consi, consi will not be run and cars go straight to feature.
No money or trophy for consi win
CHEATER/ OVERBUILT CLASS
Two(2) events, one in the spring and one in the fall( Chrysler imperials
are allowed and welcome)
Entry fee and payout to be determined
INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR TOWARDS OFFICIALS ,FANS, OR
TRACK WORKERS WILL RESULT IN SUSPENSION FROM THE
GROUNDS!! 1st offense 3 races, 2nd offense 6 races, 3rd offense 1
year(365 days)
NO EXCEPTIONS!!
